‘The 2nd Mass comes face to face with Skitters and Mechs when Tom and Hal lead a mission to finally attempt rescuing Ben and the other captured teens. Tom’s search for answers to nagging questions could jeopardize the plan to save the teenagers from the harnesses that is presented by the 2nd Mass’ latest recruit Dr. Michael Harris.‘
After a less than stellar premiere, I was hoping that the third episode of Falling Skies would be able to get me excited about the show. But unfortunately while I really want to like the show, I can’t look past the many problems it still has.
The biggest problem I have with Falling Skies is that it doesn’t really feel like it’s going anywhere. As I stated in my review of the premiere, we all know that at some point we’re going to see the resistance fighting back against the aliens. It’s part of the formula for this type of show. But while we hear the characters talking about how they want to fight back, we aren’t seeing any indication that it’s going to happen anytime soon. I’m not expecting them to be taking down aliens every five minutes, but they need to show us some indication of how the resistance will start fighting back.
While the show overall still feels lacking in direction, this episode was much more focused than the premiere. We saw what the characters wanted to achieve, and then we saw all the obstacles that were put in their way to stop them achieving it. It feels a little sad that I’m praising a show for being able to competently plot out an episode, but at the moment there’s not much that stands out about Falling Skies. It’s not bad, but it’s not very good either, it’s just very average television.
Overall, I still feel like this show has a lot of potential, but it’s not living up to it. This episode was better than the last, so hopefully things will keep improving. Apparently TNT has ordered a second season already, so at least the production team has a chance to fix what’s wrong.
What I Liked – More focused than the first two episodes. Nice midpoint twist. Good lead in to the next episode.
What I Didn’t Like – The relationship between Tom and Dr Harris didn’t quite work. Still feels like there’s a lack of direction for the show.
Rating – 3 out of 5 (Average)
