At Home With Julia – Code Ranga Review

It’s like any relationship. Who walks the dog? Who puts the bins out? Who sends the troops to Afghanistan? These are just some of the questions facing PM Julia Gillard and boyfriend Tim Mathieson.

At Home With Julia

At Home With Julia‘s first episode had its share of problems, but it was far better than I had expected. I was hoping that the second episode might do away with the obvious humour and build on the show’s strengths, but was sadly disappointed.

I don’t think that I really laughed Continue reading

At Home With Julia – Date Night Review

It’s like any relationship. Who walks the dog? Who puts the bins out? Who sends the troops to Afghanistan? These are just some of the questions facing PM Julia Gillard and boyfriend Tim Mathieson.

At Home With Julia

There has been a lot of talk surrounding ABC’s new political comedy; some have questioned whether a politician’s personal life is off-limits, while others have felt that everything is fair game. The real question was how nasty the comedy was going to be, Julia Gillard is far from the most popular prime minister and many people would use an opportunity like this to get on their soapbox about every political decision they disagreed with.

Happily, At Home With Julia avoids stepping into this trap and Continue reading

Eureka – Glimpse Review

Jo receives a technical boost to her duties with lenses that predict security breaches. Allison’s headaches won’t go away so Carter plans a vacation. Fargo, meanwhile, deals with an onslaught of volunteers when he announces a space mission with room for civilians.

Eureka continues on its hot streak with yet another fun, reference filled episode. Like last week’s excellent Reprise, Glimpse manages to tick all the boxes that make Eureka such a fun show to watch. The writers seem to have really embraced their inner geeks throwing film and comic references in at every opportunity.

Relationships are once again Continue reading

Falling Skies – Sanctuary Part 1 Review

Lt. Terry Clayton of the 7th Mass arrives at the high school with disturbing news that Skitters and Mechs are on their way to attack the 2nd Mass headquarters, Clayton claims to have a plan approved by Porter to lead the children to safety while the adults remain to fend off the attack, but his plan is met with strong resistance by all the parents, including Tom.

Falling Skies - Sanctuary Part 1
Falling Skies has been a very hit and miss show from the start, and this episode is no different. While there is a lot of great character interaction on display here, it is punctuated with moments that don’t feel real, and a lack of direction.

The episode opens with a demonstration of Continue reading

Eureka – Reprise Review

Carter’s duties expand to babysitting when Allison attends a medical conference, and Fargo finds his groove when a certain song is played. Meanwhile, a rocket scientist appears at Café Diem.

Eureka - Reprise

Eureka returned to the screen last week and reminded everyone why they loved the show so much. So, does this new episode manage to maintain the quality? Well I have two words for you: Felicia Day.

If you don’t know who Felicia Day is then you should probably Continue reading

Alphas – Cause and Effect Review

Rosen tries to cope with his Department of Defense liaison and a former Alpha patient who wants him dead… or does he?

Alphas - Cause and Effect

After a pretty solid pilot the pressure was on for Alphas to show that it could keep things interesting, there have been many shows over the years that set up an interesting concept but couldn’t follow through. Thankfully Cause and Effect not only keeps things interesting, but sets up what looks to be one of the major conflicts of the series.

The start of this episode felt like Continue reading

Alphas – Pilot Review

When a grocery clerk commits an impossible assassination, the government calls in Dr. Leigh Rosen and his team of “Alphas”: unique individuals with neurological mutations that give them special abilities. The team must determine who the killer is and track him down, but soon discover that a greater plan is in motion.

I was very ambivalent about Alphas when I first heard about it, the premise sounded like a cross between Heroes and CSI, both of which started out very interesting but quickly ran out of steam. Heroes collapsed under the weight of its convoluted backstory after a fantastic first season, and CSI quickly became very repetitive. While I don’t know how Alphas will fare in the long run, the first episode definitely shows some promise.

One thing that I particularly liked Continue reading

Falling Skies – Silent Kill Review

Hal devises a risky new plan to save the captured teenagers, but pulling it off could put someone in danger. Following a sudden tragedy, Anne makes a discovery that could mean the difference between the success or failure of Hal’s rescue plan.

Now that I’ve caught up with the show, Falling Skies won’t be dominating the blog so much. The reviews will come out once a week as the episodes air. – Al

Once again Falling Skies delivers an episode focused on the rescue of Ben Mason (Connor Jessup) from the aliens without dealing with the overall conflict. While there was a great deal of emotion on display here and some good performances, none of the issues I have with the overall series have been addressed.

I understand that the Masons are Continue reading

Eureka – Liftoff Review

Zane pesters Jo for details she does not want to reveal. Carter problem-solves at Andy and S.A.R.A.H.’s wedding. Elsewhere, Zane’s actions make him and Fargo unexpectedly airborne.

Eureka - Liftoff

Eureka has had really bad luck with scheduling over its lifespan. Thankfully, even with the crazy gaps between seasons and season halves the audience has stuck with this quirky little SF show. After a long break, Eureka is back and I have to say, this show’s still got it.

Season 4 has been a bit of a Continue reading

Falling Skies – Grace Review

Tom and Hal lead a team to find more motorcycles for the 2nd Mass after Pope provides details on where they can be found. Back at the high school where they’ve set up base Dr. Harris and Anne disagree over the best tactic to gather more intelligence on the aliens.

Falling Skies - Grace

This episode should have been a lot more interesting than it was. We started learning more about the aliens and the nature of the harness devices, there was a chance for more action in another resistance raid, and Hal is now dealing with his own guilt over what happened in the previous episode.

They had all of that great Continue reading
